Latvian basketball player Janis Timma found dead in Moscow

The basketball player Janis Timma, 32 years old, has been found dead on a Moscow street, according to the TASS agency. Russian authorities are investigating the cause of death. Among the hypotheses is the possibility of suicide.

Timma was 2.03 and played shooting guard. He was an international with the Latvian national team, his native country where he started playing basketball and won several titles. He arrived in Spain in 2017 to play three seasons at Baskonia, although he only stayed one at the Vitorian club. He returned to our country last season signed by Monbus Obradoiro.

He also played for other clubs such as Zenit de Saint Petersburg, Olimpiakos, BK Jimki, UNICS Kazan, Caciques de Huracao and Darüssafaka. In recent months he had moved to Russia to play in a 3×3 basketball tournament, which in theory would make it impossible for him to play for Latvia again.

A “complicated” relationship

Timma had been married since 2020 to the Ukrainian singer and actress Anna Sedokova. After a relationship that she had defined as “complicated,” they had divorced this month and he had publicly expressed his pain about the situation. Although suicide does not usually respond to a single cause, these feelings – and the request that they notify their ex-partner – suggest the hypothesis of the breakup as a trigger for the player’s tragic end.

Kristaps Porzingis teammate of the late Timma in the Latvian national team, has expressed his condolences with this message: “Human connection is the cornerstone of our mental health, please take care of each other.”
