Stefan Eichberger doesn’t really know what’s happening around him. The life of ÖSV ski racer is a single aha moment, new impressions constantly bombard him. The premiere in a World Cup Super-G, the first World Cup points, his maiden voyage over the Camel hump in Val Gardenahis first major press conference.
“I thought to myself: Wow, not so bad to be there everywhere,” said the 24-year-old Styrian 24 hours before Super-G in Val Gardena (11.45, live ORF1).
In the past, a runner like Stefan Eichberger would hardly have been given any attention in this country. 14th and 20th places (in the Super-G and in the downhill from Beaver Creek) were not results for big headlines, let alone bigger sporting hopes. A few weeks before one Home World Cupin which Austria was supposed to underline its reputation as a skiing nation, Stefan Eichberger suddenly comes into focus. Mind you, an athlete who has made three World Cup appearances in his career so far.
“This is our future,” emphasizes ÖSV men’s head coach Marko Pfeifer and at the same time warns against constantly rehashing the old Alpine success stories. “That won’t happen anymore. We have to be realistic: we can’t conjure up runners.”
Stefan Eichberger, 104 kilos spread over 1.86 meters, a giant of a racer, embodies this new Austrian generation of downhill skiers. The Styrian actually just wanted to get a taste of the World Cup this season. Actually it was just about gaining experience. Actually, he should be the snow of tomorrow.
We have to move away from the golden times. That won’t happen anymore. We can’t conjure runners
Staffing gap
But in view of the acute current downhill crisis, the novice Eichberger quickly becomes a beacon of hope who is supposed to save the honor of the battered ski nation. That’s a little too hasty for Stefan Eichberger. “The World Cup is thought very far ahead. You’ll have to finish in the top five for that.”
Do you really have to?
It can now be assumed that there will be runners in the Austrian World Cup squad whose names many Austrian ski fans didn’t even know until recently: An entry from Raphael Haaser (cruciate ligament overstretching) is more than uncertain, Daniel Hemetsberger are plagued by chronic knee problems and the staffing gap is enormous. “It could be that we have people at the start of the World Cup who have no chance of winning a medal,” explains head coach Marko Pfeifer. “We need every man.”
Stefan Eichberger doesn’t want to put any pressure on himself. His career should slowly pick up speed; life as a racer is difficult enough as it is. Like most of his colleagues of the same age, he already has one Cruciate ligament tear behind him.
In this respect, it can Lukas Feurstein almost lucky. The third in the Super-G in Beaver Creek “only” suffered a broken metacarpal during training and can start today with a special cuff.
