Mountaineer Alex Txikon undergoes emergency surgery for appendicitis

The Bizkaia mountaineer Alex Txikon underwent surgery this Monday in the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu, for appendicitis in the middle of the winter expedition #OdysseyAnnapurna25.

Txikon experienced nausea and vomiting during the trip to the Nepalese capital, although the team continued with the planned plan, and one hour after reaching the Annapurna base camp, suffering from severe abdominal pain, he had to be urgently evacuated to Kathmandu where he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis. Txikon underwent urgent surgery in one of the hospital centers in the Nepalese capital.

The appendicitis surgery he underwent was carried out successfully, and the mountaineer is now out of danger. Although his evolution is favorable, specialists have recommended total rest for the moment.

Txikon expressed his frustration and commented that it is “hard to have to stop” when “the mind and the heart” are on the mountain, but that health always “comes first.” “This is just a small stop along the way,” he added.
