Barça lives another agony in Fontajau and the Copa del Rey becomes more complicated

FC Barcelona lost 91-90 this Tuesday in its visit to Bàsquet Girona, with a winning basket by Ike Iroegbu with 1.7 left, in a match corresponding to matchday 14 of the Endesa League, postponed at the time due to the coincidence of appointments with the Euroleague and that has further complicated the presence of the culés in the next Copa del Rey.

In Fontajau, the locals started well with the triple and generated a juicy advantage (28-19) before settling the first quarter. Although Iroegbu soon stood out, good choral performance was the key in the team coached by Moncho Fernández, against a fairly discreet rival.

Specifically, it was Justin Anderson who took the culé responsibility in attack, with Juan Núñez surprisingly capturing rebounds. But Barça’s defense was leaking and that is why Girona continued to dominate on the scoreboard until halftime (51-44).

After the restart, Joan Peñarroya’s men slowly cooked their comeback, also with Anderson as an offensive reference from beyond the arc. On the Girona side, Maxi Fjellerup began to excel in scoring, although Iroegbu had faded; and midway through the third quarter, Barça already took the lead on the scoreboard.

The pavilion still believed, despite seeing their team at the bottom of this ACB League and suffering the appearance of Kevin Punter in long shots and Chimezie Metu in the low post. In fact, poor visitor management in the final stages fueled the reaction of a Girona team that won the duel thanks to an ‘in extremis’ reverse by Iroegbu on Tomas Satoransky.

Jabari Parker’s final shot out of time confirmed the crisis of the Blaugranas, tenants of ninth place with a balance of 7-8; They are behind BAXI Manresa (7th) and Casademont Zaragoza (8th), who both have an 8-7 record in the Cup cut. For their part, Girona remained last with a 4-11 record, but now smiling.
