Sinner beats Jarry today at the 2025 Australian Open, Jannik in the second round

Jannik Sinner advances to the first round of the 2025 Australian Open. The world number 1, holder of the title, today 13 January beats the Chilean Nicolas Jarry, world number 36 by 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in 2h40′.

The 23-year-old Italian closed his debut by winning the arm wrestling match against an opponent capable of staying in the match for 2 sets thanks to his own serve. For a good 2 hours there was no break: Jarry travels over 75% of first balls and maintains an aggressive attitude (40 overall winners and 49 errors). Sinner is still running in (57% of first balls) but avoids excessive errors (only 12 gratuitous errors) and is surgical when needed: he levels up in key moments and takes control of the match.

What Sinner said

“The first two sets could have gone either way, they were very balanced. When I got the break in the third set, I could finally breathe,” Sinner says in the post-match interview. “Jarry is a player with enormous potential, the first 2 sets were complicated but I was good at managing the key moments. It’s only the beginning of the tournament, there are things I can improve: however, I’m happy with the first official match of the ‘year,” he adds.

The match

The first games, with Jarry ‘on the ball’, suggest that the world number 1 is in for a busy day. In the first set the blue risks big at 3-3, when grants 2 break points to the opponent: the world number 1 avoids trouble and manages to hold serve. In the next game, it is Sinner who has 2 chances for the break: Jarry gets away with it and the balance holds.

The world number 1 could close the fraction in the 12th game: break point that wins the set, but the opportunity is not exploited. The epilogue is postponed to the tie-break and Sinner finally takes off. The blue escapes at 4-1, then at 5-2 and closes 7-2 without too many worries. First set in the safe after 1h12′.

The second set offers no jolts until 3-3in a script already seen. Jarry continues to rely on his serve and essentially doesn’t concede anything in the serving rounds. The picture of the match seems to change in the seventh game, when Sinner wins 2 prolonged rallies (10 and 12 shots) going up 0-30: Jarry, however, straightens the situation (4-3). There is no trace of break points, the serve dominates the scene and the verdict, even in the second half, is postponed to the tie-break.

The serve dictates the law until, as in the first set, Sinner accelerates. The blue, down 2-3, scores 4 consecutive points and with 2 mini-breaks flies to 6-3: he has 2 serves available to close the set, but gives up both points (6-5) completely reopening the games. Jarry, however, doesn’t take advantage of it: he makes another mistake, even the second set speaks Italian after 2h10′ of battle.

Jarry, empty-handed after 130 minutes of battle, feels the pinch and gives up serve at the start of the third set: it is the first break of the day, which allows Sinner to take the lead (3-0) and maintain control of the set (4-1). Jarry’s tank is now empty, the Chilean concedes the second break and raises the white flag. Sinner closes 6-1: the first was good.
