Tennis: Daniil Medvedev’s fury is a surprising target

Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev is known not only for his skills but also for his big mood swings. Both were sampled in the Australian Open first round match.

Medvedev, ranked fifth in the world, faced Thailand Cassidy Samrejn (ATP-418) and was in surprisingly big trouble.

Medvedev won the first set 6–3, but lost the second 4–6. When Samrej was serving the third set for himself, Medvedev’s nerve failed.

He lost the ball after Samrej first got a little lucky with a shot that hit the net. Samrej got two set points, which caused quite a furor on the other side of the net.

The target of Medvedev’s anger was a camera caught online, which the man beat several times before calming down. Both the camera and the bat broke in a gust of rage. The referee of the match gave Medvedev a warning about the situation.

Medvedvi was asked what kind of fine he expects to receive for the situation.

“I hope not very big. The fine usually comes from breaking the racket. I don’t think Gopro camera is very expensive. I must say that the camera was really strong. I didn’t want to break my racket, but I had to take a new one”, commented Medvedev in good spirits at the press conference.

Samrej took the third set 6–3, but Medvedev finally turned the match around by winning the next two sets 6–1 and 6–2.

Last year Emil Ruusuvuori lost a five-set match to Medvedev in the second round of the tournament. Even then, Medvedev struggled with his own game and, for example, whipped his racket. For his actions, he was fined 9,000 Australian dollars, i.e. a little less than 5,500 euros.

Medvedev made it to the final a year ago, which he lost to Italy For Jannik Sinner.
