Sonego set a record today: fourth in the Australian Open

Lorenzo Sonego in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Australian Open. The Piedmontese today beats the American Learner Tien 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in 2h25′ in the round of 16 and reaches the quarterfinals in a Slam tournament for the first time in his career . The blue player now awaits the winner of the match between the American Ben Shelton, seeded number 21, and the Frenchman Gael Monfils.

Sonego, 29 years old, paid the price only for an empty pass in the second set. For the rest, the match is a monologue of the blue player who dominates the scene with 58 winning shots, almost triple compared to his opponent’s tally (21), and an impressive 20 aces. Tien holds his own for an hour and a half, then the American’s tank remains empty: Sonego plays on velvet, triumphs and for the first time in his career can dream of the semi-final of a Slam tournament.

“I don’t know what to say, it’s an incredible result,” Sonego says in the post-match interview. “There is a wonderful atmosphere in this tournament, I always try to do better here at the Australian Open. I’m trying to enjoy every moment, I focus on my tennis without thinking about the next opponent, who will be tough. Now I just want to enjoy this result,” he says.
