Jannik Sinner will play his 10th major quarterfinal on Wednesday, his third at the Australian Open. The victory with Holger Rune, seeded number 13, also extended his winning streak, which has lasted since the Masters 1000 in Shanghai in October, to 18 matches. Today’s success came in four sets, despite a medical time-out in the third set which caused some concern.

“Today was difficult – the world number 1 said into Jim Courier’s microphone post-match – I knew that Rune had played long games, I wanted to hold serve and see if I could organize a chance in return”.

“The public was fundamental, today I needed it. 90% of it is thanks to you, 10% I tried to make you happy”, continued Sinner, addressing the public. “It was a strange morning – clarified the South Tyrolean champion regarding the problems suffered in the third set – I didn’t even warm up before the match. I knew it would be complicated, I played well and served very well, this gave me the confidence to continue to I had a chat with the doctor during the time-out, he helped me a lot: this shows that this tournament is very well organised, we are all happy to be here and compete for you.”
