Cycling: Italian Sara Piffer dies at 19 in a training accident

Sara Piffer, a 19-year-old transalpine cycling hopeful, was killed in a road accident this Friday. The sportswoman died on the streets of the village of Mezzocorona in northeastern Italy.

According to information from the newspaper Il Gazzettino, Piffer was doing a training session with her brother when she was hit by an oncoming car while overtaking. The driver is believed to be a 70-year-old man from the neighborhood.

His first victory among the pros in 2024

Despite the intervention of rescuers who arrived by helicopter and attempts at resuscitation, the young girl succumbed to her injuries. His brother was slightly injured. Accidents during training are legion in this sport and spare no one, among amateurs and professionals alike.

The cyclist was competing under the colors of the Mendelspeck Ge-Man continental team after starting cycling in Mezzocorona. She finished 18th in the Junior World Championships in 2023, and 43rd in the Italian Senior Championships a year later, before winning her first professional race at Corridonia in Marche. She had also participated in the famous ones on Strade Bianche.
