The German ski jumpers once again only played supporting roles in Domen Prevc’s World Cup victory. At the second home fly in Oberstdorf, local hero Karl Geiger (222 and 223 meters) came eleventh as the best athlete on national coach Stefan Horngacher’s team. Behind the Slovenian Prevc (226.5 and 231.5 meters), Johann André Forfang from Norway and Austria’s Michael Hayböck also made it onto the podium.
Geiger was the only German in the Allgäu who even made it into the top world class. Olympic champion Andreas Wellinger (19th) and veteran Pius Paschke (21st) had to clearly admit defeat again. Wellinger also had to struggle with the strong wind in the second round.
“It’s a different sport with so much tailwind. The jump was definitely the best of the whole weekend. With a little more luck and a little more ease, it can be done again,” said Wellinger on ZDF.
The next atmospheric home game is on the program in Willingen next weekend. Afterwards, before the World Cup in Trondheim, Norway (February 26th to March 9th), there are World Cups in Lake Placid, America, and Sapporo in Japan.
