KSC icon Schäfer is now a football director in Ghana

At the age of 75, Winfried Schäfer dares to take a comeback – not as a trainer, but as a consultant and director of the Ghanaian national football team. “In his new function, Schäfer will not only act as a technical consultant, but also supervise the development of Ghanaian football as a director of football,” said the National Association.

The former coach of Karlsruher SC is to work closely with head coach Otto Addo to build a successful team from the “Black Stars”. “It is expected that Schäfer’s rich and versatile experience for the Black Stars and the Association will be of great value, since the nation is aiming for the team’s return.” Ghana meets Chad and Madagascar in the qualification for the 2026 World Cup in March.

Schäfer hoped for trainer comeback

Most recently, Schäfer raved about a comeback as a professional football coach. “I am in top shape and would like to work again in the Arab countries, but also for a national team in Africa. The experiences that I have gained over the years are priceless, ”said the former coach of Karlsruher SC, shortly before his 75th birthday in January.

The former Bundesliga player trained the KSC from 1986 to 1998 and led the club to take place such as the legendary 7-0 victory against Valencia in the UEFA Cup and the DFB Cup final in 1996. Later he coached VfB Stuttgart and the national teams from Cameroon , Thailand and Jamaica, won the Africa Championship with Cameroon in 2002 and met Germany at the World Cup (0: 2). He also worked as a club coach in the Emirates and Azerbaijan, most recently at the Al-Khor SC in Qatar until 2021.
