DFB goalkeeper Sophia Winkler changes from Essen to Frankfurt

Football goalkeeper Sophia Winkler is moving from SGS Essen to Eintracht Frankfurt for the new season. Both Bundesliga clubs confirmed this. This also makes the transfer of Eintracht keeper Stina Johannes, who also belongs to the DFB squad, to VfL Wolfsburg. The 25-year-old is said to inherit the German cup winner, the long-time regular keeper and 52-time selection player Merle Frohms, who will leave the club.

Winkler received a contract in Frankfurt until 2029. In November, the Essener had given her DFB debut in the 6-0 victory against Switzerland in Zurich, national coach Christian Wück gives big pieces. “After the right time, it feels to take the next steps from the summer to develop myself further and measure it on top level,” said the 21-year-old, who has been playing in Essen since 2017.

“Since she is a national player, it is completely clear that Sophia is an option for the big clubs,” said SGS coach Markus Högner. “For me, she may be the best goalkeeper in Germany, especially with high balls, she has been performing absolutely constant for several years and has developed incredibly.”
