DTB Cup: Turn national coaches about scandal: Situation is “difficult”

Before the start of the DTB Cup in Stuttgart, women’s national coach Gerben Wiersma employ the abuse envelopes in gymnastics. “I would say that it is very difficult,” said the 47 -year -old Dutch at a press conference in the run -up to the four -day competition with a view to the objective.

At the end of last year, the former gymnast Tabea Alt (24) went public with severe allegations via the base in Stuttgart. Afterwards, other former, but also active gymnasts – including the German record champion Elisabeth Seitz. In addition to the Kunst-Turn-Forum Stuttgart, the base in Mannheim due to harsh and authoritarian training methods also came into view.

Difficult conditions

“If you have to train without your trainers, it always makes it difficult. A permanent coach helps a lot,” said Wiersma and, based on the challenging preparation, reduced the expectations by adding: “So we have to look day after day and for me the camp for camp. In my experience, it is also like this: If you want a result, then there must be a good structure – that is definitely not the case at the moment.”

Top trainer Aimee Boorman has now been presented in Stuttgart. The 51-year-old ex-Star Simone Biles from the USA looks after Helen Kevric, among others. The 17-year-old Olympic Easy in the all-around does not start at the DTB Cup.

According to Managing Director Matthias Ranke from the Swabian Gymnastics Association, the allegations and the associated reporting should not have any effects on ticket demand. “Basically, we are very satisfied with the ticket sales compared to the years before,” said Ranke. “I am not aware that tickets have come back, at least I know nothing about it – quite the contrary.” From the organizer’s point of view, he hopes “that we can put the sport in the foreground”.
