The long season of the ski jumpers and ski pilots came to an end on Sunday in Planica: Domen Prevc Sailed surprisingly down to 254.5 m on his home hill and is therefore a new ski flight world recordler. Had the previous record Stefan Kraft kept at 253.5 m since 2017. Prevc still snaps the day’s victory his compatriot Ants lanisk away. The Austrians remained without a podium, overall World Cup winner Daniel Tschofenig became fourth.
The Carinthian had landed with a personal best at 237.5 m, but it was just not enough for another podium. Jan Hörl also ended his successful season with a personal maximum width of 242.5 meters. The Salzburger had already been set as a World Cup rating. Hörl was the second best Austrian as a ninth, Stefan Kraft landed in twelve.
Prevc feels like film star
The World Cup balls have already been awarded, but that a new ski flight world record was coming, so nobody had expected-except maybe Domen Prevc itself. “I tremble all over the body. When you read a really good book or see a really good film: I feel like one of the leading actors,” said the Slovene in the ORF interview. Having broken the record of strength after eight years fulfills a big dream of the 25-year-old outstanding on the skiing ski jumps this season. “It was a long time. It is a dream, incredible. It was one of the main goals of my whole life.”
In addition to eight wins and 15 podiums, it was a fourth place for Tschofenig, after all, its seventh. “The fourth place does not annoy me, rather that it went down a hatch in front of me and the 240s did not run out again. But it was a brilliant season, now it is time to enjoy,” said the 23-year overall World Cup winner since Friday.
Tschofenig to world record: “Would break both knees”
When it comes to world record, the ÖSV team spoke before the end of the season. “We said that if so, he can jump it, and if so, then there. It is (below) so flat, he can get there so perfectly.” He would currently not trust himself the world record. “I break both knees below, they can shovel me out,” said Tschofenig laughing. “I don’t quite have the right flight curve.”
Nevertheless, Tschofenig summed up the season with high satisfaction. “Awesome, of course. Found the first World Cup victory, are allowed to celebrate seven more, won four hill tour tour. The World Cup has not run that way, but now being with the overall World Cup victory is absolutely awesome.” Jan Hörl, also a double season winner and 14 times on the podium, was happy. “I really enjoyed the last jump. It was the goal that I would get on the 240. I look back on the season very nicely. The World Cup was also sensational to me with four medals.”
Not jealous of strength: “Will watch flight 100 times”
The overall overall World Cup winner with a total of three has also gotten rid of his world record after eight years. “Nobody would have believed that it would be possible. He was the ski pilot of the season. That was good advertising for our sport. I will look at the flight hundreds of times on YouTube, I’m not silky.” It was also a brilliant winter for strength. “I have always been among the three in the past four years. It was also an amazing season for my colleagues and for us as a team.”
Team oldie Manuel Fettner, who will be on June 17th 40, had observed that Prevc was looking forward to this weekend. “It is extremely good for ski jumping that there is again a new world record. I hope that we will jump bigger in one or two or three years, then the hunt starts again.”
Farewell to Michael Hayböck
If there is a reason for work in the such successful ÖSV team, then maybe at ski flying itself, but head coach Andreas Widhölzl did not want to complain. “We have invested more in the middle ski jumps this year. It is good if you still have something to work.” Widhölzl thanked the athletes and the whole team for the great season with the record lead in the Nations Cup of 3,820 points on Germany. “You can only do something like that if you pull together with each other, it was a really horny season for us.”
In addition to competition, Michael Hayböck said goodbye to active sport at the end of the first round. The long -time roommate of Kraft jumped off the Bakken one last time in a farewell suit specially tailored for him. The 34-year-old Upper Austrian has achieved UA Olympic team silver and three times silver and bronze at Nordic World Championships. Hayböck made his debut on January 3, 2010. Hayböck celebrated five individual World Cup victories and became second in 2014/15. Widhölzl to the Hayböck departure: “It made me proud that I was able to accompany them. I hope that he will stay in the system.”
