Metsäriita Vello in Finland – Tero Pitkämäki and Antti Ruuskanen express their opinion

Tero Pitkämäki and Antti Ruuskanen are involved in offering a new perspective on Finnish forests.

Finnish In a short time, the forests have turned from a common pride into a political dispute.

Recently, it has been a boost that Finnish forests have become sources of emissions. In the past, the forests were carbon sinks, meaning they bind more carbon dioxide than released. Now the opposite is true.

In January, the Natural Resources Center (Luke) reported that the forests became a source of emissions from carbon sinks in 2021.

Nelonen’s new reality TV series Logging site It is partly striving to improve Finns’ image of forests by bringing the everyday life of forests closer to Finns, says former spear thrower and current forest entrepreneurs Tero Pitkämäki and Antti Ruuskanen.

The program monitors the work of several forest professionals. For example, viewers can see close to what the working days of the people in the series look like.

Pitkämäki says he owns a few hectares of forest. In his view, the debate on the emissions caused by forests has been over -quarrel with politicians.

“Forestry is often controlled from something [EU:n päämajasta] From Brussels, where there is no idea of managing the forest. I should listen to forestry professionals, ”Pitkämäki says.

According to him, the recent emission debate is too often forgotten for a big picture.

“It has been examined in a small area of Finland and it was decided that the forest does not bind carbon. I think it is quite the opposite. Isn’t Finland the most forested country in Europe,” where the forests are generally well managed and the direction is still to improve? Pitkämäki ponders.

Tero Pitkämäki hopes that the Savotta series will help viewers to better understand the everyday life of the forest industry. As an example, he mentions flight fertilization, which Pitkämäki himself does a lot through his company.

Pitkämäki emphasizes that the forests need to be cared for in order to bind carbon.

“If the forest leaves its own fortune, it will not take many years when it begins to eutrophic and the tree grows stops. And the forest does not bring any money. Forestry is a big part of the Finnish economy.”

Ruuskanen says he understands why forests evoke emotions in Finland.

“There are always negative things about interesting things. There is always a negative in the Finnish spear throwing, even if it would have been success. If there is any damage in the woods, then many news will be made right away.”

“It’s that modern, but I wish I would have news about positive things.”

In my opinion, logging is essential for the growth of the forest.

Question Forest emissions are complex, but there has often been an issue in public about whether forest felling should be reduced to curb emissions.

Pitkämäki or Ruusanen has no unequivocal answer to the hot question, but both emphasize that felling is important in forest management.

“When you look at the open felling, it’s pretty ugly, but quite a few people who evaluate these things drive a forest road to the edge of one open -fryingup.

“I think logging is essential for the growth of forests. If the trees are left to decay, then they will only cause emissions.”

According to Pitkämäki, within five years of felling, the area is already growing young oak and binds a lot of carbon.

Ruuskanen points out that often the problem is not in excessive felling, but that the forests are not properly managed.

“For example, in my home region in Northern Savonia, there are a lot of nursing work and rushes. It is extremely important that they can be treated in a timely manner so that the trees can be able and grow.

If the forests are not cared for, according to Ruuskanen, they will become rushes with willows and rest. They also belong to Finnish nature, but if there are too many, there is no longer any income from the forest.

“It is said that we have a lot of care in Finland. They also include clearing and felling work.”

According to Pitkämäki, there is no need to make any shocking change in Finnish forest management.

“I think Finland is on a good road, as long as everyone takes into account the perspectives of others.”

Tero Pitkämäki and Antti Ruuskanen say they have already thought about the company that the forest industry needed more positive visibility in Finland.

Pitkämäki and Ruuskanen founded a joint company in 2021, Pitkämäki & Ruuskanen Forest Oy. The company provides forest machine contracting and airfining services.

Since the start of the company, there have been significant changes in the world situation, such as the Russian offensive war in Ukraine. Most recently companies have been rushed by the US President Donald Trump duties set up.

“Those duties are not quite light things. I don’t reveal quite accurate specs, but the duties and the price variations of raw materials are a lot of fertilizer market,” Pitkämäki says.

“Yes, here we have been able to adjust and negotiate and plan enough things this spring.”

Savotta starts at Nelonen and on the screen on April 23.

Nelonen, Ruutu and Ilta-Sanomat belong to the same Sanoma Group.
