Football: Woltemade on the post: Newcastle wins late

Newcastle United celebrated their second competitive win in just a few days with national player Nick Woltemade. Thanks to a late goal, the former Stuttgart team won 2-1 (1-0) in the English Premier League against FC Fulham after winning 3-0 in the Champions League against Benfica Lisbon. With their third win of the season, the Magpies improved to eleventh place.

After four goals this season in five appearances in the Premier League, Woltemade missed the next sense of success in the early stages. His attempt from close range hit the post (4th minute). Teammate Jacob Murphy also hit the outside post a little later. The 30-year-old still took the lead: Murphy gave Bernd Leno no chance to defend in the Fulham goal with a shot into the far corner. The former Bundesliga keeper brilliantly prevented Murphy from making it 0-2 shortly before half-time.

On the other side, after the break, the Newcastle defense around German defender Malick Thiaw made a mistake: First, Fulham’s Raul Jimenez only hit the crossbar, and Sasa Lukic headed the rebound into the empty goal to make it 1-1 (56th).

Guimarães ensures a happy ending

Newcastle pressed for victory in the final stages. Leno again made a strong save against Sandro Tonali in the final phase (86th) and was also there in the 90th minute against William Osula, who came on for Woltemade. But Leno had no chance against Bruno Guimarães’ follow-up shot.
