Tennis: Zverev in the final in Vienna

Alexander Zverev reached the final of the tennis tournament in Vienna. The recently troubled 2021 Olympic champion won the semi-finals of the ATP 500 event, which was worth around 2.7 million euros, against the Italian Lorenzo Musetti after a strong performance 6:4, 7:5 and is now in an ATP final for the 40th time. Since professional tennis was introduced in 1968, only one German has played more finals – tennis legend Boris Becker (77).

In the final in Vienna this Sunday (2 p.m./Sky), Zverev will face Jannik Sinner, second in the world rankings. The Italian clearly won his semi-final against Australian Alex de Minaur 6:3, 6:4.

The last time Zverev and Sinner faced each other was at the beginning of the year in the final of the Australian Open, when Sinner clearly won in three sets. “It will be the ultimate challenge against one of the best players in the world. Let’s see where my level really is,” said Zverev.

Zverev defeats fearful opponents with a strong serve

Zverev was able to rely primarily on his strong serve against Musetti. The 28-year-old didn’t have a break point against him in the entire game and converted his second match point after 1:32 hours. After three recent defeats against the Italian, it was finally a win for Zverev against one of his feared opponents. “It’s always complicated against him. I’m glad I did it today,” he said.

For Zverev, who celebrated his 300th victory on hard courts, it is the fourth final of the year. Only in Munich was he able to win the title in the end. At the Australian Open and in Stuttgart, Zverev had to admit defeat in the final.
