Matteo Gamarra completes five months without playing for Cruzeiro and is expected to leave Athletico in 2025

Without being used by Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim in the game against Palmeiras, last Sunday (26), the Paraguayan defender only added seven matches, four as a starter. The last time he played was on May 28, in the goalless draw between Cruzeiro and Union de Santa Fé, from Argentina, in Raposa’s farewell to the Copa Sudamericana.

Gamarra was used twice by Furacão in the Campeonato Paranaense, when Maurício Barbieri was still the coach, and then only had five appearances for the Minas Gerais club. At the State Championship, he was a starter and ended up being substituted at half-time in the match against Cianorte, which ended in a 1-1 draw, and entered the final 16 minutes of the 3-1 victory over São Joseense, still in the first phase.

In the Minas Gerais team, Gamarra was used in the first two rounds of the Brasileirão and in three games in the group stage of the South American Championship, a tournament in which Raposa fell early. After that, he was no longer used and, if he is listed, he only remains on the reserve bench.

The left-footed defender was signed by Athletico for 3.5 million dollars, approximately R$ 17.3 million, in early 2024. This puts Gamarra as the fourth biggest signing in red-black history.

Despite being forgotten at the Minas Gerais club, Gamarra has a contract with Athletico until the end of 2027.
