Spalletti: "Juve can aim for the Scudetto". But the Napoli tattoo cannot be touched

“We all know the history of this club, its organisation, we know that there are high expectations, but entering it is a wonderful emotion”. This is how Luciano Spalletti presents himself at the press conference in which he is presented as the new coach of Juventus until June 2026 (with the option of confirmation for a two-year contract in the event of qualification for the Champions League).

“I had no difficulty in accepting an eight-month contract, because I believe in this Juventus team”, the Tuscan coach immediately clarified. “If I didn’t believe that this team had potential, why would I have accepted an eight-month contract? I think I can do a good job. The goals are high, we have to do a good job and get things back on track because the others are running fast.”

Respect for Tudor and championship ambitions

Spalletti immediately demonstrated his esteem for his predecessor. “I have absolute respect for what Tudor did – said Spalletti – I was certain that he is a splendid person, a true professional, I am sure I will find a team in good mental condition”. Hence the reason for a life and professional choice. “Yes, I hope to get back into the Scudetto round, why not?”, added Spalletti. “The intentions must be at their best, as in this case. There are 29 games left, I’ve seen all sorts of things in my 30 years of profession. I’m almost at the bottom, because I’m old, I’ll try to get my hands on it, then we’ll see what we’ve managed to do. I have absolute respect for the value of these players.”

The link with Napoli, “beautiful scudetto”

It is inevitable to talk about Naples. Yesterday the fans asked him to get a tattoo with the black and white colors to ‘compensate’ for what was done for the Neapolitan championship. “Something of superior beauty came out of what we did in Naples, it was a beautiful scudetto – he explained – I established a special relationship, everything will remain intact on my part”.

The reference to the Neapolitan shield tattoo

Then a joke: “This morning I had to do the tests and I had blood drawn from my other arm, because I don’t want to touch anything on the left (the reference to the tattoo with the Napoli coat of arms and the third Scudetto, ed.). However, I don’t want what I said about Napoli and the end of the relationship to be extrapolated, when I said that I would never wear another team’s tracksuit, I was referring to the following season – he specified – it’s clear that I shouldn’t stop being a coach after that a year in Naples”.

Comolli: “Spalletti is the perfect coach for Juve”

Juventus general director Damien Comolli, who strongly wanted the Tuscan coach, explained: “We are happy to have Spalletti here, he is a great expert in Italian football, you know his career and how much he has won. He is the person who can take the brand of football forward – he explained – we have signed a contract until the end of the season with the option to extend it, but we see a potential long-term agreement. During the season we can sit at the table and understand how to continue”, he added. “We needed to have a new coach, Spalletti is the perfect coach, all parts of the club agree, there isn’t even an inch of distance,” concluded Comolli.
