FC Barcelona’s Spotify Camp Nou and Athletic Club’s San Mamés are the only two Spanish venues candidates to host UEFA European competition finals in the coming years, with the new Blaugrana fiefdom aspiring to the 2029 Champions League final and the Bilbao stadium wants to host again, as in 2024, the Women’s Champions final in 2028.
FC Barcelona aspires to host the 2029 Champions League final at a Spotify Camp Nou that, despite the delay, is getting closer to being inaugurated and which, by then, would be completely finished with a capacity of about 105,000 spectators. The old Camp Nou already hosted the European Cup finals in 1989 and 1999.
In the case of the Spotify Camp Nou, UEFA reported that it competes with the Wembley stadium, in London (England), to be the venue for the 2029 Champions League final. For the previous edition, that of 2028, only the candidacy of Munich (Germany) with the Allianz Arena has been presented.
Meanwhile, the Athletic Club fiefdom opts to organize the final of the Women’s Champions League in 2028, as confirmed this Thursday by the continental body in a statement. The new San Mamés already hosted the UEFA Women’s Champions League final in 2024, when Barça became champions by beating Lyon 2-0.
San Mamés will have as rivals in the fight for the final of the 2028 Women’s Champions League the Parc Olympique Lyonnais (France), the St. Jakob Park in Basel (Switzerland) and the Ali Sami Yen Stadium in Istanbul (Turkey). For 2029, the candidates are Lyon, Dublin (Republic of Ireland), Basel and Cardiff (Wales).
The UEFA Executive Committee will designate the venues for the eight finals – including those of the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League and Women’s Champions League in 2028 and 2029 – in September 2026, after receiving the complete bid dossiers before June 10 of that year.
As for the other competitions, the contenders for the Europa League final are France (Lyon or Paris), Italy (Turin), Romania (Bucharest), Serbia (Belgrade) and Turkey (Ankara), while for the Conference League France (Lille), Hungary (Budapest), Italy (Turin), Kazakhstan (Astana or Almaty), Poland (Gdansk) and Finland (Helsinki) have applied.
