Sport–Kiekko-Espoo 2–3
Kiekko-Espoo got a valuable away win from Vaasa on Wednesday, when the team defeated Sport with a score of 2–3.
With the win, Kiekko-Espoo rose to 41 points in the SM league and fifth place in the standings.
The people of Espoo started the match with a bang. Arttu Tuomaalan and Santeri Virtanen the hits gave the visiting team a 2–0 lead even before the opening set was halfway through.
Gold helmet Tuomaala’s hit was born Janne Hämäläinen as a result of a brilliant puck grab. Virtanen’s opening hit of the season, on the other hand, came from in front of Sport’s goal with a two-man advantage. Tuomaala collected an assist on Virtanen’s hit.
Sport got on top of the goal right at the beginning of the second period, when Johan Sundström directed by Simon Hjalmarsson shot Petteri Rimpinen behind the back.
Kiekko-Espoo tenaciously defended its lead until the middle of the final set. By Branden Troock however, a power play finally brought the home team level. Järkälemäinen Troock bombed his shot irresistibly into the top corner of the goal guarded by Rimpinen.
However, the people of Espoo were not startled by the setback. Sport Hannes Häkkilä was ordered to the ice hall five minutes before the end of the match and the visiting team seized their opportunity. Peter Quenneville flashed the little black into the net at the end of a goal-scoring scramble.
Sport challenged the verdict, but even the video referees did not find the goalkeeper’s interference in the situation. Quenneville’s hit ended up being the game-winning goal.
Kiekko-Espoo will next play on Saturday of the current week in Lappeenranta as a guest of SaiPa.
