Flick doesn’t give Ter Stegen any hope for Barça appearances

Hansi Flick has given national soccer goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen a new setback on the way to a comeback. The German coach from FC Barcelona once again declared Joan Garcia the starting goalkeeper for the Spanish league leaders.

“Joan is number one, nothing else,” said Flick before the home game against CA Osasuna in the Spanish La Liga (Saturday, 6:30 p.m./DAZN). Flick said he doesn’t have a permanent second or third goalkeeper, but he has a number one that he believes in. “We won’t be replacing Joan, he’s doing a very good job.”

Flick: “I spoke to him, that’s my job”

He also told ter Stegen this: “I spoke to him, that’s my job. But that remains a matter between him and me.”

The 33-year-old returned to FC Barcelona team training at the beginning of December a good four months after his back operation. When 24-year-old Garcia was out injured for a few weeks at the end of September due to a torn meniscus, Wojciech Szczesny (35) was in goal.

According to media reports, the financially troubled club would like to get rid of the ex-Mönchengladbacher in order to be able to save his million-dollar salary. Ter Stegen’s future in the national team is also uncertain around six months before the start of the World Cup. Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann is currently number one in the DFB selection.
