Alpine skiing: Emma Aicher steals the show from Lindsey Vonn

Germany’s alpine skiing hope Emma Aicher impressively stole the show from the two speed queens Lindsey Vonn (USA) and Sofia Goggia (Italy) at the second World Cup downhill in St. Moritz. With an almost flawless run, the 22-year-old all-rounder pushed past the two top favorites into first place and celebrated the third victory of her career.

“I had a really good feeling and wanted to do better than yesterday,” said Aicher at the Eurosport microphone. “I did quite well, I’m happy with my performance today.” She was also able to push herself to the limit to beat Vonn and the other favorites, says Aicher: “My coach always says I have to push even harder when the slopes are rough. So that’s exactly what I tried to do.”

At the finish in sun-drenched Corviglia, the emotional skier Aicher was a solid 0.24 seconds ahead of Vonn, who had won her 83rd World Cup victory the day before. The Olympic silver medalist Goggia was 0.05 seconds behind the 41-year-old American, whose celebration of her supposed best time was suddenly interrupted by Aicher around two minutes later.

Kira Weidle-Winkelmann placed 14th, 1.34 seconds behind (+1.34 seconds). She met the national Olympic standard on Friday with eighth place. Weidle Winkelmann missed out on a better placement on Saturday due to a mistake in the upper part of the course when she almost landed on the seat of her pants after an unsuccessful jump.
