“It will obviously be a special game,” Leko said after Sunday’s 5-1 win over last-placed Dender. “But I am now the coach of Club Brugge, so I will focus entirely on the match,” he added.
Leko played for Club Brugge from 2005 to 2009, and was its coach from 2017 to 2019. Last week he returned to the club he called his “home in Belgium” and lost 0-3 against London’s Arsenal in the Champions League for the first time. Before the match, he said that he accepted Club Brugge’s offer because there he can fight for the title and play in the Champions League, “which he can’t do this season with Gent”.
“I absolutely understand the anger in Gent, I understand that they are frustrated and disappointed in this way because the moment was inconvenient and because everything happened quickly. There was no time to meet and explain, it was simply a special moment, and in football sometimes things happen quickly and unplanned,” he said before the match with Arsenal.
Leko was also the coach of the Belgian clubs Leuven, Sint-Truiden, Royal Antwerp and Standard Liege last season, and led Hajduk during 2023.
Gent reacted quickly and within two days hired Rik De Milo (44), who during his career led Charleroi, Westerlo and Club Brugge, as a coach.
“There he is, life goes on. He also brought good, new energy,” said Paskoski. “Today we started well and were better than Antwerp. However, as sometimes happens in football, individual mistakes put us behind. After that, we tried to come back and had more possession.
