Germany’s darts professional Ricardo Pietreczko has made it into the second round of the World Cup in London. The 31-year-old defeated the Portuguese veteran José de Sousa 3-1 in the evening at Alexandra Palace and thus achieved an opening victory in his third World Cup participation. In round two, Pietreczko will face either the Englishwoman Fallon Sherrock or her compatriot Dave Chisnall.
Pietreczko, nicknamed “Pikachu,” got off to a mixed start and lost the first two legs. Then the Berlin native improved significantly and took sets one and two in the decisive fifth leg. “I got into it really badly. I had circulatory problems in the middle of the third set. My vision was black at times,” Pietreczko reported to DAZN.
Four out of five Germans victorious
Pietreczko quickly made everything clear against de Sousa, who was weak this season, although he weakened quite a bit in the third set. Pietreczko reached the third round of the 2024 World Cup, and last year he made it to the round of 16.
Pietreczko was the fifth German to enter the tournament at this World Cup. Debutant Arno Merk, former World Cup semi-finalist Gabriel Clemens and returnee Max Hopp each mastered their opening tasks. Only Lukas Wenig had to admit defeat to the Dutch Wesley Plaisier 1:3. It is the first World Cup with 128 starters.
