Verstappen and the agreement with Mercedes, the tweet sends Formula 1 into a tailspin

Max Verstappen announces an agreement with Mercedes. The Dutch Red Bull driver, 4 times Formula 1 world champion, publishes a post on social media announcing an agreement with the German company. “Verstappen Racing has communicated a multi-year collaboration with Mercedes-AMG starting from next season”, writes Verstappen, sending the motoring world into an uproar.

The 28-year-old, who finished the 2025 World Championship in second place behind Lando Norris, has been linked to Mercedes for months for a sensational transfer to the circus. The Dutchman is tied to Red Bull by a contract valid until 2028 and his stay in the team also appears to be a given in 2026. For 2027, however, the prospects could change. Meanwhile, the agreement announced today creates a first bridge between the driver and the German company: “Verstappen Racing will continue in the 2026 GT World Challenge Europe European championship, both in the Sprint and Endurance cups, with a Mercedes-AMG GT3”, the details of the agreement.
