Mainz brings Stuttgart striker Silas

FSV Mainz 05 has signed another striker in Silas from Bundesliga rivals VfB Stuttgart. As the bottom of the table announced, the 27-year-old Congolese international signed his contract on Tuesday. His contract with VfB only ran until the end of the season. The clubs have therefore agreed not to disclose the transfer modalities.

Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert said: “Everyone immediately associates him with speed, assertiveness in a 1-1 draw and goal threat, which he has already impressively demonstrated at VfB Stuttgart. Silas is a reinforcement for our squad and brings new facets to our offensive game.”

The Mainz team had previously strengthened themselves with attacker Phillip Tietz from FC Augsburg. The Zero Fives only scored 13 goals in 15 games and were never able to compensate for the departure of striker Jonathan Burkardt to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Two serious injuries set Silas back

Silas was not used for VfB this season. After his furious early days in Stuttgart with promotion in 2020 and then eleven goals in 25 games, the ex-Parisian tore a cruciate ligament. In the following season he struggled with serious shoulder surgery, but was no longer able to return to his best form and was loaned out to Red Star Belgrade in 2024/25. According to media reports, only a small transfer fee is due for Silas.
