British professional cyclist Simon Yates ends his career. The reigning Giro winner and 2018 Vuelta champion announced his decision in a statement on Wednesday. “I thought about it for a long time and have now come to the conclusion that it is the right time to retire from the sport,” said Yates, who most recently worked for the top team Visma-Lease a Bike.
Like his still active twin brother Adam (UAE Emirates-XRG), the 33-year-old had his strengths especially in the mountains. Among other things, he won three stages in the Tour de France, six in the Giro d’Italia and two in the Vuelta in Spain. Yates had previously celebrated success on the track. In 2013 he became world champion in the points race.
“Cycling has always been a part of my life,” Yates said. “I am very proud of what I have achieved. I am also grateful for the lessons I have learned along the way.”
