Austria’s World Cup opponents Algeria: Consequences after exit from the Africa Cup

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into what happened after the Morocco-Cameroon game. “The CAF has collected recent match reports and video footage indicating potentially unacceptable behavior by some players and officials and has launched an investigation,” a CAF statement said.

After the game there were also clashes between Algerian fans and security personnel. Algeria deservedly lost the game, but were dissatisfied with referee Issa Sy’s performance and lodged a complaint against the Senegalese with CAF.

“The Algerian Football Federation cannot ignore the refereeing performance in the last match, as it raised numerous questions and caused considerable confusion. Certain decisions have damaged the credibility of African refereeing and do not contribute to increasing the value of continental football at international level,” the Algerian Football Federation explained its action.

At the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada, Algeria will be the ÖFB team’s last opponent in Group J on June 28th (4:00 a.m. CET) in Kansas City. Before that, Ralf Rangnick’s selection will face Jordan on June 17th (6:00 a.m.) in San Francisco and against defending champion Argentina on June 22nd (7:00 p.m.) in Dallas.
