FSV Mainz 05 will only comment on the possibly serious injury to Benedict Hollerbach on Sunday after a detailed investigation. “I had a conversation with him. He’s actually taking it calmly,” said coach Urs Fischer. “I can’t say exactly what he has. Our doctors will clarify that tomorrow. So I don’t want to speculate now.”
Hollerbach was injured in the 2-1 (1-1) draw at RB Leipzig in the eleventh minute without any influence from the opponent. The striker collapsed, clutched his right lower leg and screamed in pain. The 24-year-old, who came from Union Berlin in the summer, was taken off the pitch after minutes of treatment.
Fischer: Happy victory
Hollerbach ultimately watched the game from the bench. After the final whistle, he went into the Mainz dressing room on crutches. Silas, who came on as a substitute for Hollerbach, made it 2-1 for Mainz in the 49th minute. Previously, Nadiem Amiri (45th + 6th) had equalized Leipzig’s lead by Conrad Harder (40th) with a penalty kick.
For Mainz it was the third win in the last four games. As a result, coach Fischer’s team climbed out of the relegation zone at least temporarily and improved to 15th place. “The victory is a happy one in the end. It was an open game for over 60 minutes,” said Fischer. “The team protected the goal with everything they had.”
