Bad luck with injuries: Hollerbach is out of the season – Becker is coming back

FSV Mainz 05 caused a surprise shortly before the transfer deadline: 16th in the table. The Bundesliga has signed attacker Sheraldo Becker. The 30-year-old, who played for Union Berlin for five years, is moving on loan from Spanish first division club CA Osasuna. This was Mainz’s reaction to Benedict Hollerbach’s serious injury.

The attacker tore his right Achilles tendon in the 2-1 win at RB Leipzig on Saturday. The club announced this on Monday evening. The 24-year-old will be out until the end of the season.

Season over for Hollerbach

“First of all, we wish Benedict Hollerbach all the best and the fastest possible recovery! We will give him the best possible support in returning to the team as quickly as possible,” said Mainz sports director Niko Bungert.

Renewed collaboration between Becker and Fischer

Mainz reacted immediately to the failure. Becker played for Union in the Bundesliga from 2019 to 2024, scoring 24 goals in 140 competitive games and preparing 26 more goals. His coach at the time: Urs Fischer, who has been training Mainz 05 since the beginning of December.

“We are glad that we were able to find a solution in such a short amount of time that doesn’t take a long time to get used to and brings us even more quality into the squad,” said Bungert.

Becker was most recently under contract with Real Sociedad and Osasuna, but was only used there irregularly. He still has a contract there until 2028.
