Real Sociedad appeals the “scandalous” expulsion of Brais Méndez in the Basque derby

Real Sociedad has appealed the “scandalous red card” that midfielder Brais Méndez saw in the final stretch of Sunday’s derby against Athletic Club in San Mamés (1-1), corresponding to the twenty-second day of competition in LaLiga EA Sports.

“Real Sociedad has presented allegations regarding the scandalous red card shown to Brais Méndez in yesterday’s match,” reported the San Sebastian entity on the social network X.

In the 83rd minute of the duel played in San Mamés, with the ‘txuri urdin’ team winning by the minimum and without the ball in play, Aitor Paredes pushed the Galician midfielder, who raised his arm to get away from him, and the Athletic Club defender fell to the ground, feigning an attack.

The Balearic referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernández, with his back to the play and without the VAR intervening, showed the direct red card to Mos. Subsequently, he stated in the minutes that he had sent off the footballer for “being guilty of violent conduct for slapping an opponent in the face with excessive force when the ball was not in play.”

Finally, Ernesto Valverde’s team took advantage of their numerical superiority to tie the match with a goal from Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta in the 88th minute.
