Young French player Tahirys Dos Santos, who was seriously injured in the fire in Crans-Montana and who saved his girlfriend from the flames and was celebrated as a hero, cannot yet think about his career again. “I don’t concentrate too much on football. The most important thing is that I recover well,” said the player from the French first division football team FC Metz to the magazine “Paris Match”. “I’m just concentrating on getting the use of my hands back, being able to walk properly again, and then we’ll see what happens next.”
After the disaster in Switzerland, the 19-year-old was first taken to a special clinic in Stuttgart and later moved to his homeland in eastern France. From his hospital bed, he described to “Paris Match” the dramatic minutes when the fire broke out in the bar.
Back into the flames to save her girlfriend
He and his girlfriend were in the toilet at that moment. “I went out beforehand, wanted to go to the first floor, and that’s when I saw the fire. It all happened very quickly, I didn’t really think. I immediately went to Coline, called her, she was in the toilet, and we ran up the stairs.” There was a huge crowd and a lot of screaming, and later he sat on the floor in front of the bar with severe burn injuries, frozen in shock.
Tahirys Dos Santos only saw his girlfriend, who was temporarily in a coma, at the end of January. The two of them couldn’t hug each other yet, the many burns still had to heal, reported “Paris Match”.
