The English second division soccer team Leicester City will have six points deducted in the current season because the club is said to have violated the applicable financial rules in the 2023/24 season. This was announced by the responsible English Football League.
This means that Leicester slips from 17th to 20th place in the second-tier Championship. Only goal difference separates the club, which was relegated from the Premier League last summer, from the relegation zone.
According to the profitability and sustainability rules, Premier League clubs are not allowed to make a loss of more than the equivalent of around 120 million euros over a period of three years. For each season in a lower league, this amount is reduced by around 25 million euros.
An independent commission came to the conclusion that Leicester had exceeded the amount by around 22 million euros in the 2023/24 season, which ended with promotion to the Premier League.
