MP denounces businessmen for trying to manipulate Londrina players

According to the complaint, the trio used social media to offer money to players in exchange for specific actions during the match. One of the athletes received an offer of R$15,000, which was denied and reported at the time to the Londrina board. Everyone refused the proposals.

The MPPR also highlights that “one of the leaders of the scheme used the fact that he was the son of a renowned boxer to gain the trust of the victims”. He is Igor Gutierrez Freitas, son of the former boxer Acelino Popó Freitas.

“Investigations indicate that those involved contacted professional players via social media and also via the WhatsApp application, with financial promises in exchange for specific events on the field, such as deliberately receiving a yellow card. These people were reported for criminal association and corruption in the sporting field”, explains Public Prosecutor Leandro Antunes Meirelles Machado.

Described in the General Sports Law, crimes against the uncertainty of the sporting result have penalties ranging from two to six years of imprisonment, in addition to payment of a fine. The Public Ministry also requested the payment of R$150,000 in collective moral damages, “as a form of reparation for the damage caused to the integrity and uncertainty of the sporting result”.

At the time the case became public, in September last year, Londrina repudiated the attempt to entice its players. The club also highlighted that everyone refused the proposal and quickly reported it to the board. Subsequently, Tubarão contacted the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), through the Paraná Football Federation (FPF), to take the appropriate measures.

“We express our deep respect and admiration for the athletes who, in addition to refusing the illicit proposal, had the courage to approach the board to denounce the malicious attitude. Londrina Esporte Clube SAF is vehemently against any form of manipulation of results and will continue to work in close collaboration with the competent authorities to combat these practices and guarantee the fairness of competitions.”
