Ski freestyler Elias Lajunen from Finland caused a shocking moment in the big air qualification at the Olympic Games with a violent fall. The 18-year-old lost control after the jump and hit his back on the icy surface. Lajunen is the son of three-time Olympic champion and former Nordic combined athlete Samppa Lajunen.
At first Elias Lajunen remained motionless, then after medical treatment and to the encouragement of the spectators, he was transported away in a sleigh. He stuck his thumb up – the first sign of the all-clear. Lajunen then no longer took part in the competition.
Big Air is about performing tricks in the air and landing safely after jumping over a large ramp. The jury awards points for, among other things, the level of difficulty, clean execution, height and landing.
