The Norwegian ski racer Atle Lie McGrath experienced a sporting drama in the Olympic slalom in Bormio and then gave free rein to his emotions in an unusual way. The 25-year-old went into the second round as the leader with a clear lead and had the gold medal in mind, but then gave up and was eliminated.
Deeply disappointed, McGrath first threw away his ski poles and then set off on foot towards the forest. The Scandinavian ran across the piste, passed the barrier, went further and further – and finally dropped into the snow near a few trees.

McGrath is currently one of the best slalom skiers in the world. The Norwegian has already achieved a World Cup podium five times this season and is also leading the overall ranking in the slalom run.
At the Winter Games in Northern Italy he also benefited from his early start number one in the first run. Several other top drivers had to retire early due to snowfall and poor visibility. After his mistake in the final, McGrath had to hand over the gold medal to the Swiss world champion Loic Meillard.
