No cramp has a chance against a little mustard – at least according to the experiences of Germany’s ice hockey star Leon Draisaitl. The captain of the German Olympic team in Milan told the TV station Eurosport. “Mustard is really good for cramps,” said the 30-year-old, who is playing with the German team against France on Tuesday (12.10 p.m./ARD and Eurosport) for a place in the quarter-finals.
Why Draisaitl sometimes allows himself a spoonful of mustard
During the Germans’ 5-1 defeat against the USA, TV pictures showed the NHL star eating a small sachet of mustard. This didn’t go unnoticed by many fans who were wondering about the unusual snack on Platform X.
When he feels on the bench that a cramp might be coming, Draisaitl resorts to the home remedy. “It works best in my opinion. And every now and then, when I have the feeling that it could happen, then I’m a little proactive and throw in a spoonful of mustard,” said the striker from NHL runner-up Edmonton Oilers.
The acetic acid contained in mustard can relieve cramps or have a preventative effect because it helps to stimulate blood flow to the strained muscles.
