The German team for the Paralympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo is growing to 40 athletes and eight guides. As the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS) announced, Para Alpine skier Maya Fügenschuh and Para Nordic ski athlete Steffen Lehmker will join the line-up as replacements. Only in 1994 in Lillehammer was the German Paralympics team larger with 43 participants.
The 17-year-old Fügenschuh is also the youngest athlete on the German team and will make her Paralympics debut at the beginning of March. “I’m really happy that I can take part in the Paralympics. It hasn’t really sunk in yet for me,” said the Allgäu native from SV Hindelang. Johanna Holzmann will act as her accompanying runner. The 30-year-old took part in the Olympic ski cross competition in Beijing four years ago.
Lehmker, who moved up, already has a medal
Lehmker already has Paralympics experience. In 2018, the 37-year-old from Lower Saxony won a bronze medal in the cross-country skiing relay at the Games in Pyeongchang. “Of course I was still secretly hoping, but it’s crazy that it’s finally working out. The anticipation is correspondingly great,” said the vocational school teacher.
At the Winter Paralympics from March 6th to 15th, German athletes will be taking part in five sports for the first time. Only wheelchair curling takes place without German participation. A total of 79 decisions will be made in six sports. The aim of the German association is to be among the top six nations.
