Speed skater Sonnekalb remains without an Olympic medal

Speed skating hope Finn Sonnekalb clearly missed out on a medal in his second Olympic race. The 18-year-old took 13th place in the 1,500 meters at the Winter Games in Italy in 1:45.64 minutes and didn’t have the slightest chance of winning any precious metal.

US star Jordan Stolz suffered a surprising defeat. The sprint dominator only took second place behind the Chinese Ning Zhongyan. The 26-year-old ran an Olympic record of 1:41.98 minutes and won Olympic gold for the first time in his career. The Dutchman Kjeld Nuis came third.

Stolz missed out on his third gold medal in Milan after winning the 500 meters and 1,000 meters. The second best German behind Sonnekalb was Hendrik Dombek in 19th place, Moritz Klein took 20th place.

Sonnenkalb stopped by infection after opening ceremony

Sonnekalb, who fell ill with an infection after the opening ceremony, was unable to fulfill his performance potential in front of his parents, just like eight days earlier when he came twelfth in the 1,000 meters. The teenager is considered the greatest hope in German speed skating for a long time.

This season, Sonnekalb made it onto the podium three times in the World Cup with two second places and one third place. Last November he set a junior world record in the 1,500 meters in Salt Lake City.

The youngster was also the only realistic candidate for the first Olympic medal in German speed skating since 2010. The last man to win precious metal was Jens Boden in 2002 in Salt Lake City with bronze in the 5,000 meters.
