Athletico opens million-dollar negotiation for African who plays in Europe

Looking for signings until the end of the transfer window, the Athletico made an offer for Nigerian-born striker Abraham Marcus. The 26-year-old player plays as a winger, that is, on the sides of the field, and is at Estrela Amadora, which competes in Portugal’s Primeira Liga.

According to journalist Ekrem Konur, who specializes in international transfers, Furacão offered 2.5 million euros, around R$15 million, to the Portuguese club. However, the proposal was rejected due to business values. Estrela wants a higher offer, as it holds 60% of the athlete’s economic rights. The other 40% are from Porto, the Portuguese giant.

The newspaper To Ballone of the main Portuguese vehicles, also confirmed the start of negotiations. However, he points out that the Estrela Amadora board wants the striker to remain, considered one of the “essential pieces” for the club to guarantee its permanence in the elite of Portuguese football.

Abraham Marcus has three goals and four assists in 20 games in the current European season. A curiosity is that he plays in the same team as defender Luan Patrick, revealed in Athletico’s youth categories.

In the previous three seasons, he played for Porto B, which competes in LigaPro, the Portuguese Second Division. After 23 rounds, Estrela Amadora appears in 12th place in the Primeira Liga, with 23 points, five ahead of Santa Clara, which opens the relegation zone. It is worth remembering that, unlike the Brasileirão, the Portuguese Championship is played by 18 clubs and only two are relegated.

Abraham Marcus began his career at the Goodland Rangers academy and then went to Remo Stars, one of the clubs in the Nigerian First Division.

After that, he completed his training at Feirense and Portimonense, both Portuguese clubs, and had loans to Radomiak Radom, from Poland, and Porto’s B team, which disbursed 750 thousand euros, in the 23/24 season, to sign a contract with the player until the end of June 2028.

If signed, Abraham will be the second African player in Athletico’s history. The first was midfielder Yao Wendvinnegre Tanguy Gael, born in Burkina Faso, a West African country, who arrived in Curitiba last year. Currently on the under-20 team, Gael signed a two-year contract, that is, until 2027, with the option to renew for a further three.

Athletico tries to sign international signings before the end of the window

With the end of the transfer window in eight days, more precisely on March 3rd, Athletico continues in negotiations to reinforce the squad to guarantee its permanence in Série A of the Brasileirão.

However, a change by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) could expand Athletico’s market innovations. The highest authority in Brazilian football will expand the transfer window for players who competed in the State Championships. The new window should run from March 4th to March 27th.

According to an investigation by the OneTwo Sportsthe red-and-black leadership still wants a defender, a wing forward and a center forward to be Kevin Viveros’ immediate backup.

In this scenario, the red and black board ruled out the return of midfielder David Terans and continues in negotiations for striker Edwin Cetré, from Estudiantes. It is worth remembering that defender Cacá, from Corinthians and signed with Vitória, and striker Everaldo, who signed with Bahia after leaving Fluminense, were targets of Rubro-Negro.

Looking for new things in the market, Athletico is preparing to face Bragantino. The fourth round game of the Brasileirão takes place this Wednesday (25), at 7pm, at the Cícero de Souza Marques stadium, in Bragança Paulista, in the interior of São Paulo.
