Mainz have been without top scorer Amiri for several games

Bundesliga soccer team FSV Mainz 05 will probably have to play without top scorer Nadiem Amiri for several games. “It will definitely take a few games. You can’t say exactly,” said Mainz sports director Niko Bungert after the 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen about the loss of the ten-time goalscorer this season. Before the game, the club announced that Amiri was missing due to a heel injury.

“There was no incident. He reported pain, which then got a little worse, so he had himself examined again and that’s when the exact diagnosis came out,” explained Bungert. When asked whether Amiri could return before the international break at the end of March, he replied: “It’s difficult to predict that right now. That could perhaps work before, perhaps only afterwards.”

Coach Urs Fischer emphasized that Amiri was a “serious failure” as a difference player and that his quality was particularly lacking in the last 25 to 30 meters against Leverkusen. “But the team showed that they can make up for this loss,” summed up the coach after winning the point.
