Suek: Many reports have been made about Mirjami Penttinen’s alleged inappropriate behavior

Figure skating club HSK’s coach Mirjami Penttinen several reports of alleged inappropriate behavior have been made to Suek, the Finnish sports ethics center. The matter is confirmed by Suek’s head of investigation Jouko Ikonen.

Helsingin Sanomat according to the report, Penttinen’s inappropriate behavior towards underage skaters has continued. In 2020, he received a ban from competition for shouting and humiliating.

Suek received notice of Penttinen’s activities in December 2025. A preliminary investigation has been opened into the situation, which is currently underway.

However, this is not the only announcement about the situation. Suek has received many other notifications as well. So many people in the sports community have taken action, and Suek goes through all the notifications.

According to Ikonen, most of the announcements have only been made after the matter became public.

“We have also received new notifications after the matter became public”, Ikonen reveals.

An icon reminds that Suek can leave the case uninvestigated or submit a disciplinary claim if more than five years have passed since the alleged violation. Some of the notifications Suek received were related to events from many years ago.

“We have received reports, some of which are related to events more than five years ago, and some are more recent cases.”

“Of course, we go through all the reports, because the reports are different people’s accounts of the events.”

Suek considers the notifications based on the information provided in them. According to Ikonen, it would be important that there is concreteness in the announcements. An identifiable notification is more useful than a completely anonymous one.

“It makes the investigation easier if the notifications are identifiable. We also consider how relevant they are to the case.”

Ikonen cannot yet estimate how long the preliminary investigation will take. Based on the preliminary investigation, Suek decides whether it is appropriate to start an actual investigation of the situation.

Miriam Penttinen is one of the most successful Finnish coaches in formation skating. He has taken the senior series Team Unique to the World Cup medals last spring.

In the HS story, four athletes and four parents told about the naming, humiliating and controlling that Penttinen has been guilty of. Some of the parents defended the coach.

Helsingfors Skridskoklubb announced on Friday that the employment relationship between Penttinen and HSK will end on April 13. With these prospects, Penttinen will coach the club’s SM senior team, Team Unique, until then. The team is preparing for the World Cup.

In 2023, the Figure Skating Association received information from Suek about anonymous contacts and received an explanation of the measures from HSK. In the past two years, however, no reports have been made to the association about Penttinen’s behavior.
