Double bronze for Austria: “I’m going to put a Roman behind my armor”

The duo from Lower Austria had a close race with the Italian Giacomo Bertagnolli and the Canadian Kalle Eriksson in the first round, the Super-G. The three pairings were only separated by 45 hundredths in the first three places.

In the slalom, it was the fourth-placed Brit Neil Simpson who led the way and gave the competition an almost impossible task. Aigner fell behind Simpson and the fight for third place became a thriller. In the end, Eriksson remained five hundredths behind the Austrian.

Only the half-time leader Bertagnolli was unimpressed by all of this and secured gold.

Medal celebration at Grochar

Thomas Grochar was the second medal candidate in the standing competition. The Carinthian showed a strong performance in the Super-G and was pleased with second place. In the slalom, the 32-year-old veteran only fell back to third place, but the Russian Bugaev, who was leading at halftime, was eliminated on the way to gold. And so Grochar was able to celebrate the medal at his last Paralympics.

A wave pool of emotions for Carinthians. When third place showed up, he was very frustrated; he was already expecting fourth place. He almost didn’t notice the Russian’s failure. Now he was rewarded for his years of hard work. This bronze is correspondingly emotional for him. In the evening there will be a big celebration, he promises: “I will, as they say in Italian, put one behind the armor.”
