German striker Dennis Eckert Ayensa has been called up to the Iranian national football team squad. “Eckert has been invited to the training camp and will have the opportunity to play for the Iranian national team after receiving the necessary FIFA approvals,” the Iranian Football Association (FFI) said in a statement.
The 29-year-old has a German father of Persian descent and a Spanish mother. His aunt is renowned Iranian actress Anahita Dargahi. Eckert Ayensa played, among others, for the Spanish first division team Celta Vigo and for FC Ingolstadt in the second and third divisions. He has been under contract with the Belgian club Standard Liège since 2024.
Not the first German national player for Iran
He is the fifth German player with Persian roots in the history of the Iranian national team. Before him, Ferydoon Zandi, Amir Shapourzadeh, Daniel Davari and Ashkan Dejagah played for the country. While Dejagah was even captain at times, the other three were less successful.
The 35-man squad nominated by head coach Amir Ghalenoei will travel to Turkey for two preparatory games, where games against Nigeria and Costa Rica are planned, according to the FFI according to the Isna news agency. The FFI left it open whether these games actually serve as preparation for the upcoming World Cup.
After the recent military attacks by the USA and Israel, the FFI initially announced that it would not take part in the World Cup. However, it was later said that Iran would compete – but on the condition that they wanted to play the three preliminary round games in Mexico.
