Andy Diaz wins the gold medal in the triple jump at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Torun, Poland. The Italian won with a time of 17.47, ahead of the Jamaican Jordan Scott (17.33) and the Algerian Yasser Triki (17.30), retaining the world title won a year ago in Nanjing. Diaz triumphs with the season record obtained on the first jump. The initial exploit allows him to manage the situation with a series of control (16.91-pass-17.08-pass-null). In seventh place in the triple was the outdoor world vice champion Andrea Dallavalle with 16.90.
In the 21 editions of the Indoor World Championships only one other Italian athlete, Gennaro Di Napoli, had celebrated two titles: also consecutive for him, over 3000 meters in 1993 and 1995.
“We are a winning Italy and the blue brings me luck. The second gold is better than the first, it wasn’t easy to confirm the title but I did it”, the words of Diaz. “Two weeks ago my coach and I were thinking of not coming here and of moving directly to the outdoor season – reveals the Italian triple jumper -. We told ourselves to try, because there was nothing to lose, and to go and do what we like. I’m very happy to give another medal to Italy, I thank all the people who helped me reach this goal. And now it’s a celebration!”.
