Tears of joy after a furious final: The Japanese Kaori Sakamoto celebrated the end of her career at the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague with a phenomenal free skate. The 25-year-old celebrated her fourth world title in the Czech capital without a single visible wobble and fought back tears of joy. She won gold three times in a row from 2022 to 2024. Sakamoto, who was already in the lead after the short program, set a personal best of 238.28 points, improving her previous record by more than two points.
Sakamoto won ahead of her compatriot Mone Chiba (228.47 points) and surprise third-place finisher Nina Pinzarrone (215.20 points). The Belgian also benefited from her competitors’ mistakes. Among other things, US star Amber Glenn made a serious mistake and fell from third place to sixth after the short program. Glenn fought back tears after her free skate and had to accept the next disappointment after placing fifth at the Olympics.
Sakamoto is only missing the Olympic victory
All Sakamoto needed to complete her career was an Olympic victory. Four years ago in Beijing she came third, five weeks ago at the Winter Games in Italy she came second behind Alysa Liu from the USA. After a long and grueling Olympic season, Liu decided not to take part in the World Cup.
As was the case at the World Championships in Boston last year, a German figure skater was not present because no athlete had met the starting requirements of the world association ISU.
