National coach: Wück on homosexuality in football: “Learn from the women”

Men’s national coach Julian Nagelsmann had previously campaigned for an open approach to homosexuality in football following the coming out of FC St. Pauli’s young coach Christian Dobrick. “I think it’s a shame that we still have to discuss it,” said Nagelsmann in an interview on RTL/ntv. “It’s a shame you have to ask me that question.” Homosexuality is something completely normal for him.

St. Pauli’s U19 coach recently made his homosexuality public and linked it to criticism of top-class male football. “Gays are still considered aliens in professional football,” said the 29-year-old youth coach of the Hamburg Bundesliga club in interviews with “Stern” and RTL.

Wück: Maybe normal at some point

“This is the first time something like this has happened with men. It’s always difficult at the beginning,” said Wück and expressed the hope: “Maybe it will become normal for us in football in general at some point.”

Homosexuality is still a taboo topic in men’s professional football, although fan representatives in particular are campaigning for a more open approach. There has so far been no coming out of an active professional in the top three German leagues. In women’s football, however, a player’s sexual orientation has long ceased to play a role.
