“This mountain, source of so much happiness, took him”: the world of mountaineering mourns its prodigy guide Benjamin Ribeyre

It was a death that deeply moved the world of mountaineering. On March 24, high mountain guide Benjamin Ribeyre tragically died during an off-piste ski descent near the legendary Meije valleys, accompanied by an American client. He had just turned 35.

The terrible accident occurred at a cliff of around sixty meters which blocked the descent, on the so-called “d’Orcière” route. No surprise for this guide who knew this mountain like the back of his hand. The avalanche risk was low and the weather was good. He had already spotted this critical passage and knew how to cross it.
