FC Bayern makes their dream cup final against Wolfsburg perfect

As in the previous two years, the FC Bayern Munich footballers have reached the final of the DFB Cup and can therefore continue to dream of a historic treble. The Munich team won 4-0 (3-0) in the semi-finals against SGS Essen, who were second to last in the Bundesliga. In the final on May 14th, the defending champions will face VfL Wolfsburg in Cologne. The record cup winner had beaten Carl Zeiss Jena 5-4 on penalties the day before.

For coach José Barcala’s team, which was always superior, Momoko Tanikawa (29th minute), Pernille Harder (40th) and Edna Imade (45th + 4 and 73rd) scored the goals in front of 2,500 spectators in the sold-out stadium on the Bayern campus.

“We are the clear favorites. We want to win the DFB Cup,” the injured Klara Bühl said on Sky before the game. The bold announcement by the national player, who wants to be ready for action again in the next league game at Union Berlin on April 22nd, was followed by her ball-skilled teammates with action and three goals before the break.

Fine preparatory work from Gwinn to make it 1-0

A fantastic volley goal from Arianna Caruso in the 22nd minute didn’t count because it was offside. Shortly afterwards, Bayern still led after national team captain Giulia Gwinn hit Tanikawa with a backheel, who finished flat.

The Essen team found no means to counter Bayern’s joy in combining. Harder and Imade each headed the score to 3-0 before the break. “Just keep playing dominantly, add one or two more goals,” demanded Gwinn in the break interview on Sky. That was then done by Imade, who was once again there with her head.

On the way to the first women’s treble in the club’s history, the biggest challenge awaits the Barcala team in the Champions League. On April 25th and the beginning of May the semi-finals will be against top favorites FC Barcelona. The eighth German championship – the fourth in a row – is only a formality given the 13-point lead over Wolfsburg.

Rech confirms interest from Chelsea

“We want to push through to the end, even if we have very, very tough weeks ahead of us,” said Bayern director Bianca Rech, who also spoke about her own future. “Yes, Chelsea was interested in me. But my path will continue at FC Bayern Munich,” said the 45-year-old, who has been leading the Bayern footballers as department head for almost two years. She still sees “a lot of potential in the next few years”.
